NHL Discord bot — live NHL goals and scores in your server
Updated
Layup posts live NHL scores into a Discord channel at no cost: all 32 clubs, every game from preseason through the Stanley Cup Final, updated every five seconds, with every goal named to the scorer and assists. Two slash commands set it up. Free, with no account and no paid tier.
Free. Manage Server on the server you pick, and nothing else.
Which NHL games does Layup cover?
Layup covers every game on the NHL schedule for all 32 clubs, from the September preseason through the Stanley Cup Final, polling each live game every five seconds and posting every goal with the scorer and assists. Hockey has one filter under it — league:nhl — and the thirty-two clubs, grouped by division below, are the values the team option accepts, so a channel can carry the whole league or one club and nothing else. Coverage is read from the provider's active-team list at startup rather than typed once, which is how the Utah franchise's current name is already on the list. There is no second hockey league in the bot: no AHL, no junior hockey, no international tournaments, and a channel scoped to sport:hockey gets the NHL and nothing else.
Does it cover preseason and the playoffs?
Yes to both, because the bot never checks. Each poll fetches the day's games by date with no season-type filter, so a September preseason game posts the way a June Cup Final does. The playoff feed is the regular-season feed on a different date: the provider sends a best-of-series score alongside every playoff game, the bot records it, and no post displays it, so a Game 7 reads like any other one-goal game until the final says (OT).
What an NHL alert looks like
A score post carries both clubs in their colours, the score, the period — P1 to P3, then OT, then SO — and a footer with the live line on it. The start post is labelled Puck Drop and carries each side's win-loss-overtime-loss record when the standings cache has it; there is no starting-goalie line, because the provider does not send one before the game.
✓ EDM -1.5 • O 6.5 • NHLEdmonton are covering the puck line at that moment and the game has gone past six and a half goals. Hockey totals sit close to six, so a single goal is a large move in the number, and the footer is recomputed from the live score every poll. The footer sits on every sport's posts and is described once, on the home page.
How do I add NHL scores to my Discord server?
You need Manage Server, and the command runs in the channel you want the scores in:
/layup add league:nhlSet the team option instead to follow one club — start typing and Discord searches as you type. Hockey's abbreviations collide with the other sports: BOS, DAL, WAS, PHI and TOR each belong to three or more clubs across the bot, and MIN to five, which is why the suggestion carries the sport and league and the raw key is never shown. The setup guide has the authorisation screen with screenshots and the command reference documents every option.
Two commands and you're done. No dashboard.
Which alerts fire during an NHL game?
Feeds post six categories of event, set per feed by its preset or its scope. Hockey is the one sport that fills all six:
| Alert type | In an NHL game |
|---|---|
| Play-by-play | Puck drop, the start of each period and the end of the first two, overtime, the shootout, and the final tagged (OT) or (SO) when it took one. |
| Scoring | Every goal, with scorer and assists, and (PP) on the title when it came on the power play. |
| Momentum | Two unanswered goals, lead changes, a two-goal deficit erased, a four-goal margin in the third, and clutch time in overtime. |
| Milestones | Hat tricks, shutout watch once a goalie reaches the third period with twenty-plus saves and nothing past them, and forty saves. |
| Betting | The total going over, a player going over a goals, assists, shots, points or saves line, and a player within half a unit of one. Outcomes, not picks; details on the alert types page. |
| Penalties | The only sport with any. A two-to-four-minute penalty posts as a power play, five-plus as a major — and shorthanded and empty-net goals file here too, not under Scoring. |
Betting alerts need a scope. A bare /layup add posts play-by-play and nothing else; naming hockey, the league or a club switches the betting category on with the rest.
Can I get goal alerts without getting every shot on net?
You already do, because the fear has nothing behind it: the bot has no shot-on-goal event. A goal posts. A save posts nothing until a goalie reaches forty of them, or reaches the third period on a shutout. The nearest thing to a shot alert is a player crossing their shots-on-goal prop line, which is a Betting alert and off unless the feed has that category.
The dial that actually matters on a hockey feed is Penalties. It is the category most people reach for to quiet a channel, and turning it off also removes shorthanded and empty-net goals, because the bot files those two goal types with the penalty events. If you want every goal and no penalty calls, the honest answer is that there is no preset for it today; Highlights (no betting) keeps both. On a league feed the defaults do the quieting for you — every category posts, only the big plays ping.
The numbers Layup uses to decide an NHL game got interesting
Hockey's thresholds are the smallest in the bot because its scores are: two goals is a run, four is a blowout, and clutch time is defined in overtime only — the shared detector's other late-game trigger is a fourth period, which hockey does not have, so a one-goal game in the last minute of the third never fires it.
| Alert | Fires at |
|---|---|
| Scoring run | 2 unanswered goals |
| Blowout | 4-goal margin, from the 3rd period on |
| Comeback alert | 2-goal deficit erased |
| Clutch time | Overtime only, margin ≤ 1, ≤ 5 minutes left |
| Prop hot zone | Within 0.5 of the line |
| Hat trick | 3+ goals |
| Shutout watch | 3rd period, 0 goals against, ≥20 saves |
| Goalie milestone | ≥40 saves |
| Power play vs. major penalty | 2–4 minutes = power_play, 5+ minutes = major_penalty |
Every NHL team Layup follows
All 32, by division, each with the exact team value to type. Generated from the bot's own startup load, so this is what the autocomplete offers. Every other feed's list is on the teams page.

NHL Discord bot FAQ
- Will it post every shot on net?
- No — there is no shot-on-goal event in the bot at all. A goal posts with the scorer and assists; a shot that does not go in posts nothing. Shots on goal exist only as a player prop line the Betting category can resolve.
- Are power-play goals called out separately?
- In the title, yes: a power-play goal is the ordinary goal alert with (PP) appended. Shorthanded and empty-net goals are their own alerts, and — this is the non-obvious part — they file under the Penalties category, so a feed that turns Penalties off loses those two goal types as well.
- Does it cover the playoffs and overtime?
- Every game the provider lists for the date posts, playoffs included, with no special handling; the final is tagged (OT) or (SO) when it did not end in regulation. The bot receives the best-of-series score but no post shows it.
- Can I follow one club?
- Yes. Run /layup add and start typing the club in the team option. BOS is the Bruins, the Celtics and the Red Sox, so the suggestion reads Bruins · Hockey · NHL and picking it settles the sport. A team feed applies no category filter and notifies on everything.
- Is it free?
- Free, with no paid tier and no account. One channel per club across a whole server is fine; nothing is metered.
Other sports Layup covers
The NBA Discord bot page covers the league that shares hockey's October-to-June calendar, the soccer Discord bot page covers the other sport where a goal is the alert, and the setup guide covers the install itself.
Free, no limits. Add it before puck drop.
