Alert types — what each category posts, sport by sport
Updated
A Layup feed posts six categories of alert: Play-by-play, Momentum, Milestones, Betting, Penalties and Scoring. What each one contains depends on the sport — the toggle that removes touchdowns in football removes nothing in golf — so this page maps all six onto every sport the bot covers, then shows which are on by default for your feed's scope.
The six categories
Every event the bot can post belongs to exactly one category. The middle column is the bot's own one-line description of each, as its registry words it.
| Category | In the bot's words | What it holds |
|---|---|---|
| Play-by-play | Start, end, overtime, halftime, period breaks | The bookends of a game: start, quarter and period ends, halftime, overtime, final. In golf and NASCAR, the tournament or race start and finish, rounds, and a followed player teeing off. |
| Momentum | Scoring runs, lead changes, comebacks, clutch time | Team-level swings: scoring runs, lead changes, comebacks, blowouts, a close game entering its final minutes, and the two upset-watch alerts in college sports. |
| Milestones | Triple doubles, hat tricks, walkoffs, no-hitters | Individual performances: triple-doubles, hat tricks, walk-offs, home runs, no-hitter watch, goalie milestones, and in golf the per-hole results, cuts and eagles. |
| Betting | Props, spreads, over/under hits | Outcomes, never picks: the game total going over, a player prop line being hit, and a player closing in on one. Absent in golf and NASCAR. |
| Penalties | Power plays, major penalties, red cards | Power plays and major penalties in hockey, red cards in soccer, and the short-handed and empty-net goals hockey files here. Every other sport: nothing. |
| Scoring | Goals, rallies, shutouts | Goals in hockey and soccer, touchdowns, field goals and safeties in football, runs batted in and rallies in baseball. |
What each category fires, sport by sport
Read down a column for one sport. A dash means the category exists but nothing in that sport ever lands in it — turning it off changes nothing, and turning it on adds nothing. Only alerts that reach real channels are listed; a handful of NASCAR events that post to the preview channel alone are not.

What a new feed gets by default
Leaving categories and notifications off does not mean “everything”. The bot reads the feed's scope and picks both, and the two move in opposite directions: the narrower the feed, the more categories it keeps and the more of them ping.
| Scope of the feed | Categories kept | Volume |
|---|---|---|
Nothing named — /layup add on its own | Play-by-play only | Silent |
| A sport | Play-by-play, Momentum, Scoring, Betting | Game Start & End |
| A league or conference | All six | Big Plays |
| A team, golfer or driver | No filter at all — everything the sport produces | All Notifications |
Two exceptions. A golf feed is never filtered by category at any scope, because golf controls its own noise: on a tour-wide feed a birdie or bogey posts only for the leader and a double bogey only for a player in contention, and a category filter on top of that would silently drop the leader's round. And a feed created through one of Layup's single-league listings — the application called NFL Scores — drops Betting from its default, because that listing is reviewed and installed on scores alone. Choosing a categories preset explicitly overrides both.
Changing it after the feed exists
The reply to /layup add carries three menus, and they are the quickest way: a preset picker, a category multi-select that ticks the six categories one by one, and a volume picker. Only you see that reply; picking from a menu saves the feed and redraws the menus with the new state, so you can adjust more than once.
The command is the other way. A feed is identified by its channel and its scope, so running /layup add again with the same sport, league and team updates that feed in place rather than creating a second one — the reply says “feed updated” instead of “feed added”, and it carries the same three menus. Repeat the command with a categories value, a notifications value, or both.
/layup add league:nhl categories:Highlights (no betting) notifications:Big Plays| Option | What it sets |
|---|---|
categories | One of the six presets the command reference lists. Everything, Scores Only, Betting + Scores and Highlights (no betting) resolve to category lists; Player Highlights matches on the player tag instead, so it follows individual performances across every category, and Player Highlights + Betting matches the player tag or the betting-line tag. The option itself takes a preset only; the category multi-select on the reply is where you pick them one by one. |
notifications | The five volume settings — All Notifications, Big Plays, Betting, Game Start & End, Silent — described on step 5 of the setup guide. |
The bot corrects two combinations that cannot work. Betting mode on a feed with no Betting category becomes Game Start & End. Big Plays on a feed that keeps only Play-by-play or Betting has nothing dramatic to notify on, so it becomes Betting if that category is present and Game Start & End otherwise. Betting alerts themselves notify in every mode except Silent, whatever the feed's base volume. To stop a feed altogether, /layup remove in its channel lists the channel's feeds and removes the one you pick.
Alert types FAQ
- Why did turning off Scoring stop the touchdowns?
- Because in football that category is the touchdowns. A scoring play with an attributed scorer files under Scoring, and the quarter breaks you keep seeing are Play-by-play. If you want the drives without the bookends, turn Play-by-play off and leave Scoring on.
- Why does a feed with no options never ping anyone?
- A bare /layup add follows every sport, keeps only Play-by-play, and resolves its volume to Silent. That is the safe default for a feed that could cover sixty games on a Saturday. Naming a sport, league or team is what widens the categories and turns notifications on.
- Can I keep over/under alerts but drop player props?
- No. The over hitting, a prop hitting and a player approaching a prop line are one category, Betting, and it is on or off as a unit. The Betting + Scores preset gives you that category with the bookends and momentum, nothing else.
