Set up Layup in your Discord server

Before you start

You need Manage Server on the server you are adding to. Both of Layup's commands are restricted to it. If you do not have it, send the permissions page to whoever does — it is written to be forwarded.

Step 1 — Add Layup to your server

Open the install link and pick your server from Discord's server picker. Only servers where you have Manage Server appear in that list.

Step 2 — Approve the permissions

Discord shows you exactly what the bot is asking for. The three Layup cannot run without are View Channel, Send Messages and Embed Links. Every item on that prompt is explained on the permissions page, including six that are requested but unused.

Step 3 — Run /layup add

Go to the channel you want scores in and run the command. Leaving every option blank is valid and gives you everything:

/layup add

Or scope it in the same line you install with:

/layup add sport:Football league:ncaaf

There are five options — sport, league, team, categories and notifications — and all five are optional. league and team are autocomplete: start typing and Discord searches. The command reference documents each one.

Step 4 — Adjust the alert types (optional)

There are two separate controls and it is worth knowing which is which:

• The categories option on the command takes one of six presets — Everything, Scores Only, Betting + Scores, Player Highlights, Player Highlights + Betting, or Highlights (no betting).
• After the feed exists, a select menu toggles the six individual alert types — play-by-play, momentum, milestones, betting, penalties and goals.

The preset is a shortcut chosen at creation; the select menu edits the feed afterwards.

Step 5 — Set the volume (optional)

The notifications option takes All Notifications, Big Plays, Betting, Game Start & End, or Silent. Silent still posts everything — it just stops pinging.

There is no “Auto” in that list. The scope-aware smart default is what you get by leaving the option off entirely, which is why the option describes itself as “omit for smart default based on scope”. Following one team gets you everything it does; following a whole sport gets you the wide-scope default instead.

What if nothing posts?

1. No game is live. By far the most common cause. Layup posts events as they happen; it does not backfill.
2. Channel permissions. The bot needs View Channel and Send Messages in that specific channel, which a channel-level override can revoke even when the server-level grant looks fine.
3. Wrong channel. Feeds belong to the channel you ran the command in. Run /layup remove there and re-add it where you meant.

Setup FAQ

Nothing has posted. Is it broken?

Usually no game is live. That is the most common cause by a distance and nobody says it out loud. Layup posts events as they happen, so a feed created at 3am on a Tuesday will sit silent until the next game starts.

How long does setup take?

Under a minute. Two steps: authorise the bot, then run /layup add in the channel you want scores in.

Can I have more than one feed?

Yes. A feed belongs to the channel you created it in, so run /layup add once per channel — one for NFL, one for your school, one for everything.
